Celebration of 79th Independence Day of India in Mali
The Embassy of India in Bamako marked the 79th Independence Day of India with a series of vibrant events that highlighted the spirit of freedom, cultural ties between India and Mali, and the shared love for cinema as a bridge between nations.
2. On August 15, 2025, the Embassy organized a grand Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Embassy Residence, attended by members of the Indian diaspora, Indophiles and friends of India. The ceremony was conducted with great fervor and vibrancy, commenced by the hoisting of the tri-colour by Ambassador-designate Dr. N. Nandakumar, who then delivered the address of the Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, to the nation on the eve of Independence Day, emphasizing unity, progress, and India's global contributions.
3. The event featured captivating cultural performances that showcased the patriotic zeal of participants. Renowned Indophile Mr. Mofas Khan, also known as Bharat Ka Beta, enthralled the audience with renditions of Indian patriotic songs. The Indophile Dostana group presented energetic dances to iconic Indian patriotic tunes, while members of the Indian diaspora contributed through soulful singing of patriotic songs and heartfelt poetry recitations. Mr. Oumar Coulibaly, a Yoga teacher, also showcased difficult Yoga postures during the event. The ceremony concluded on a delightful note with the serving of Indian cuisine, fostering a sense of community and cultural exchange.

In a collaboration to strengthen bilateral cultural relations, the Embassy partnered with the Ministry of Culture, Handicrafts, Hotel Industry and Tourism of Mali, the Fédération Nationale des Associations Cinématographiques du Mali (FENACAM) and National Centre for Cinematography of Mali to host the inaugural India-Mali Film Festival from August 15 to 17, 2025, at the Balla Moussa Hall in the Centre International de Conferences de Bamako (CICB).
5. The festival was inaugurated on August 15, 2025, by H.E. Mr. Koumbouna Diarra, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, Handicrafts, Hotel Industry and Tourism, who served as the Chief Guest. It was highlighted that Indian movies, especially Bollywood movies were very popular in Mali and served as a powerful bridge for promoting cultural understanding between the two nations. Shri S.S. Barwal, Counsellor (HOC) delivered the welcome speech.

The inauguration drew a distinguished gathering, including directors and prominent personalities from the Malian film industry, high-ranking Malian government dignitaries, Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps in Bamako, the Indian diaspora, and attendees from diverse walks of life. Over the three-day festival, approximately 500 attendees witnessed a curated selection of films that celebrated both Indian and Malian storytelling traditions.
7. The lineup of films included acclaimed Indian films such as English Vinglish (premiere show), 83, Boomba Ride, 8 Down Toofan Mail, and Amma Kanakku, alongside Malian productions, viz., a film on the first President of Mali, Mr. Modibo Keita, and Da Monzon: The Conquest of Samanyana. As part of the festival, the Embassy, in partnership with FENACAM, organized a short films competition and panel discussion with prominent film personalities. Selected short film was screened, showcasing emerging talent and fostering creative collaboration.
8. Many Malians expressed their enthusiasm for Indian cinema, underscoring its popularity in the region. In recognition of their contributions, the doyens of Malian film industry were honored with Chiwara Trophies, a traditional Bambara symbol linked to the mythical figure Chi Wara, believed to have taught farming to the people and representing good luck and prosperity. The inauguration event also featured a vibrant spread of Indian cuisine, which was savored and widely admired by attendees.
9. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Embassy Chancery was illuminated in the tri-colors of the Indian flag on the evenings of August 14 and 15, 2025, symbolizing India's journey of independence and its diverse democracy.
10. These celebrations not only commemorated India's Independence Day but also reinforced the deep-rooted friendship and cultural synergies between India and Mali. The Embassy of India remains committed to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation through such initiatives.
