Press Release on the celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026 in Mali
The Embassy of India in Bamako in association with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Civic Education and Citizenship Construction of Mali successfully celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 on 21 June 2026 at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maïga stadium, Bamako.
2. H.E. Mr. Abdoul Kassim Fomba, Hon’ble Minister for Youth and Sports, Civic Education and Citizenship Construction of Mali graced the occasion as the Chief guest and addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of sports, wellness, and healthy living. Ambassador of India in Mali Dr. N. Nandakumar extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests and congratulated the participants on the International Day of Yoga. Hon’ble Madam Khadidia Sangare, Chairperson of the Commission for the Promotion of Women, Family, Child Protection, Youth, Sports, Labour and Employment of the CNT, Hon’ble members of CNT, Ambassadors accredited to Mali, representatives from the diplomatic Missions, National Youth Council, students from the Kurukanfuga University of Bamako, Free Scientific University of Bamako, members of India Mali Amity Association, members of Indian diaspora and Malian citizens from all walks of life participated enthusiastically in the celebration. reflecting the growing popularity of yoga as a means to promote physical and mental well-being in Mali.
3. The yoga session was conducted by Mr. Oumar Coulibaly, ICCR-empanelled Yoga Teacher. Under his guidance, participants practiced a series of asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) as defined under the globally recognized Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), ensuring a structured and enriching experience for all.
4. The Embassy organized a series of curtain raiser and run-up activities to build awareness and enthusiasm for IDY 2026 as detailed below:

A Curtain Raiser event was held on 30 May 2026 at the Chancery premises under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, bringing together yoga enthusiasts, members of the Indian diaspora, and local participants. The event included engaging interactions, with Malian practitioners sharing their personal yoga journeys. The event attracted significant local media attention. It was featured in L’Alerte (Malian newspaper) and NCP News Mali (digital news and social media reporting outlet).

A Yoga Run-up event took place on 06 June 2026 at the iconic Tour de l’Afrique, symbolizing African solidarity. The venue provided an inspiring setting to promote yoga’s message of harmony, peace, and unity.

A 3rd Run-up Yoga Session was organized on 13 June 2026 at the Embassy Residence. The session offered participants a refreshing and rejuvenating experience.
5. The main event of IDY 2026 that was held on 21 June 2026 received a wide media coverage, including by the National Television channel ORTM and leading Malian daily newspapers.
6. The successful organization of the 12th International Day of Yoga in Bamako once again reaffirmed the universal appeal of yoga as a holistic approach to health and well-being and strengthened the cultural ties between India and Mali.
