Statement
In its efforts of modernizing and securing documents with the view to facilitate procedures of issuance of entry and short term visa to foreigners desirous to visit the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and also to promote investments & tourism, the Government has put in place a system at the International Airport of Nouakchott, the border post PK55 of Nouadhibou and at the Embassy of Mauritania to Paris, to issue biometric visas. The system will be gradually established at the other diplomatic missions of Mauritania abroad, at national airports and border posts.

Hence, the foreigners desirous to obtain a biometric visa are requested to go to one of the three places which are already equiped in accordance with the provisions under visa issuance procedures.

Biometric Visa
Note on the procedure related to the issuance of biometric visa

Background:
Within the framework of establishing a System for Identification and Securing of National Documents, a system of issuing biometric visas is underway in Diplomatic Representations and at Border Posts (Airports and Land Borders) of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The system will allow centralization of data related to the applications and issuances of biometric visa.

As of now, it is possible to obtain a biometric visa at the Embassy of Mauritania in Paris, the International Airport of Nouakchott and Border Post at PK55 of Nouadhibou. Other diplomatic or consular representations, airports and border posts will be equipped with requisite tools in the days to come to meet the needs for applications and issuing of biometric visas.

PROCEDURE ON OBTAINING BIOMETRIC VISA AT A DIPLOMATIC OR REPRESENTATION OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF MAURITANIA

First stage: application for visa
The applicant should appear at the visa issuing office at a diplomatic or consular representation of Mauritania to apply for visa. A form will be provided to him/her. After filling up the form, the applicant must return the filled form to the office where he/she has been given it along with all the documents indicated in the form (such as Passport, invitation, hotel booking receipt,...)
Second stage: payment
the visa fees are set according to citizenship of the applicant and the duration of stay in Mauritania as indicated hereafter:

Payment is made in cash at the diplomatic or consular mission (other payment methods will be set later: online payment, payment by card, bank transfert...)

when the payment of visa fees is done, a receipt will be issued to the applicant and an authorisation for enrollment will be established.

Third stage:  Enrollment
On the basis of authorization for enrollment, the technical service will proceed with the registration of biographic data (name, first name, date of birth, Passport n°...) and capture of the biometric data (fingerprint and headshot)

Fourth stage:  Issuance of visa
At  the end of the appointment, the applicant shall appear again at the visa ussuing service with his/her application submission receipt. In case the visa is granted, a biometric visa sticker will be printed and pasted to his/her passport. In case the visa is not granted, the passport will be returned to the applicant.

 First stage: application for visa

With his/her passport, the traveller appears at the visa issuing office at the border posts (Airport, Land borders)

Second stage: payment
the visa fees are set according to citizenship of the applicant and the duration of stay in Mauritania as indicated hereafter:

Payment is made in cash at the biometric visa issung authority at the border post (other payment methods will be set later: online payment, payment by card, bank transfert...)

Third stage:  Enrollment
The enrollment of applicant will consist of recording his/her  biographic data (name, first name, date of birth, Passport n°...) and capture of the biometric data (fingerprint and portrait image).

Fourth stage:  Issuance of visa
At  the end of the enrollment,  a biometric visa sticker will be printed and pasted to the applicant's passport.

Fifth stage:  Control at border police
With his/her passport holding the “biometric visa”sticker,  the traveller shall appear at the police for control and formalities (automatic registration, bar code 2D reading or through fingerprint) at the entry to Mauritanian territory.

Note:

  • enrollment (registration of alphanumeric and biometric data) is required for each application for visa even if the applicant has already got one or more visas
  • the fingerprinting is required for all except minors less than 10 years old. However, their presence is necessary for capture of photo
  • For foreigners residing in Mauritania, the establishing of the new biometric visa system does not change the existing procedures. Indeed, they must present valid biometric resident permits.
  • Visa fees are not refundable even in case of reject of application.
